Ask most parents what matters most in school, and the answer is usually mathematics and English. Both are essential — but a child who only excels in exam subjects is missing half of what a good education is meant to build. Mathematics: more than numbers
Mathematics teaches logical thinking, problem-solving and patience with difficulty — skills a child uses far beyond the classroom, from managing money to reasoning through everyday decisions. A child who is comfortable with numbers grows into an adult who is comfortable with uncertainty.
Language and literacy: the foundation for everything else
Every other subject depends on a child's ability to read, write and express an idea clearly. Strong literacy skills, built through reading, writing practice and public speaking, are what allow a child to succeed in science, social studies — even mathematics word problems.
Science: teaching children to ask why
Science education, especially when taught through observation and simple experiments rather than memorisation, teaches children to be curious rather than to simply accept what they're told. That habit of asking 'why' and testing an idea is one of the most valuable things a school can instil.
Social studies and values education
Understanding Liberia's history, geography and civic life helps children see themselves as part of something larger, and builds the values — honesty, responsibility, respect for others — that shape how they treat people for the rest of their lives.
The arts, music and physical education
Cultural showcases, music, art and sport are often treated as extras. They aren't. Creative subjects teach children to express themselves and take healthy risks; sport teaches teamwork, discipline and resilience after losing. Together, they build the self-confidence that carries into every other subject.
